After a 36 year hiatus, men's golf is returning as a varsity sports to CMU.

The announcement was made Thursday in a press release from CMU Athletics.

“I am excited to add men’s golf, a program that will fit well into our sport offerings," said athletic director Amy Folan. "This program is well-positioned for success in the future based on the strong resources available in our community and in our state,” said Amy Folan.

With the addition of men's golf, CMU will offer a total of 17 varsity sports and now meet the NCAA Division I FBS sport sponsorship requirement. CMU was granted a waiver by the NCAA to drop below the minimum number of men’s sports the past two years.

“Our top priority is to offer programs that provide an exceptional experience for our student-athletes," Folan said. "I feel strongly we will be able to do this with our men’s golf program based on the financial parameters necessary for a successful program. We are fortunate to have so many fantastic golf courses locally and statewide, which will make this an attractive program for prospective student-athletes.”

Men’s golf was first offered as a varsity sport at CMU in 1936 and was discontinued after the 1984-85 season. CMU competed in the Mid-American Conference from 1973 to 1985 and returns as the ninth MAC program to currently sponsor the sport.
