Senior forward Jahari Smith puts up a shot, Jan. 13 in McGuirk Arena.

Without Head Coach Heather Oesterle, leading scorer Molly Davis and senior Kalle Martinez, Central Michigan (4-14, 2-7) women’s basketball needed someone to step up against Miami (Ohio) (6-10, 2-5) on Wednesday.

Senior Jahari Smith provided the spark that propelled the Chippewas to their second home win of the season, as they beat the RedHawks 70-59 in McGuirk Arena. Assistant coach Courtney Sheldon served as the team's head coach in the win.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak for CMU. Without Davis on the floor, the Chippewas finished the game shooting a season-best 50% from the field on a 25-for-50 performance. In comparison, Miami finished 20-for-69 from the floor.

While recording a career-high 21 points, Smith led the Chippewas in rebounds finishing with 14 to record her sixth double-double of the year. Junior Anika Weeks grabbed her third double-double finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Miami’s Peyton Scott led all scorers with 23 points while notching five rebounds and four assists.

The Chippewas face Akron on Jan. 29, at 1 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
