OWLS celebrates return to in-person Slut Walk

Students and community members gather to protest rape culture and sexual harassment April 27, 2019 in front of Warriner Hall.

For the first time in two years, the Organization of Women Leaders will celebrate the Slut Walk in-person on Central Michigan University's campus.

The ninth annual event will take place from 12 - 3:30 p.m. on April 23.

Slut Walk is an international movement that calls for an end to victim blaming, street harassment, slut shaming and sexual aggression. It originated in Toronto when five women organized a protest against a police officer that told students that if women want to avoid rape, they shouldn’t dress like “sluts.”

"I am most looking forward to being able to come together in such a big way to show support to survivors and demand change," OWLS president, Olivia Solis, said. "I'm also looking forward to being able to march in person again after the past two years being virtual."

OWLS will meet outside the Bovee University Center at 12 p.m. and the march will start at 1 p.m. The CMU police department will escort.

There will be a rally from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in front of Warriner Hall with speakers and performers.

Afterwards, OWLS will meet students in the UC Lakeshore room for a reflection on the event with other activities resources.

"OWLs has by far been my favorite experience at CMU and what I’ll miss most after graduating," Solis said. It’s amazing being part of a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about the same things I’m passionate about."

OWLs is an intersectional feminism organization that fights for human rights on and off campus through education, activism and advocacy. It will be changing its name to Feminist Leaders on Campus, or FLOC, next semester to be more inclusive to people of all gender identities.
