Central Michigan baseball kicked off its 2023 Mid-American Conference home schedule with a series win over Kent State this past weekend and one Chippewa is being rewarded for his part in the home-opening series win.

Graduate pitcher/outfielder Garrett Navarra has been named MAC Pitcher of the Week following a nine-strikeout performance on Sunday through seven scoreless frames. His efforts on the mound helped lead CMU to a 2-1 win in game three of the Chippewas’ series with Kent State, which gave them the series win in the rubber match.

The LHP from Sterling Heights was CMU’s opening-day starter this season and currently ranks second among starting pitchers on the team with a 4.78 ERA, as well as second in strikeouts among all pitchers with 30 on the year.

While Navarra has been a steady presence for the Chippewas in the pitching department, he provides an element of versatility as he is also a more-than-capable bat in the lineup evidenced by his .329 batting average and 24 hits - both of which lead the team in their respective categories.
