Actor Penn Badgley, known for his roles in The CW's "Gossip Girl" and Netflix's "YOU", is set to speak at Central Michigan University's Speaker Series event at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20 in the Plachta Auditorium.

Badgley will be joined by Arizona State University psychotherapist Dr. Nura Mawzoon. They will discuss how to navigate volatile and polarized spaces in society and create dialogue across divides.

This event is part of their "Can We Talk?" series, which has hosted events at other institutions to discuss these issues, as well as to create an open dialogue with students, staff and community members.

At CMU, each year, the speaker series committee, which is sponsored by President Neil Mackinnon and Provost Paula Lancaster, chooses a speaker whom they may find relevant to the greater campus community. Past speakers include Misty Copeland, principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, and Angie Thomas, author of "The Hate U Give."

"Each year, their focus is on relevant speakers," the Director of University Events Misheaila Neil said. "This program is going to be very much an open discussion, which is not something we've done before. So this is a little different format.

"It's been a different thing everywhere they've gone because it's very much driven by ... those (who) are attending."

The event is free for all community members, students and faculty to attend.
