Poindexter: Facts, Not Confusion: How SGA Budgeting Works
Carnell Poindexter
Student Government Association Treasurer
Recent reporting has included several inaccuracies regarding the Student Government Association’s budget process and my role within it, and I want to clarify the record.
I manage SGA’s internal budget, but I do not personally distribute payments. In addition, I chair the Student Budget Allocation Committee (SBAC), alongside my committee. Any suggestion that I control or direct individual stipend payments is incorrect.
The delay referenced in the article concerned the release of the SBAC form, not the distribution of funds. That delay resulted from a disagreement within the committee regarding the interpretation of the bylaws — specifically, whether holding two elected positions simultaneously was permissible. This was a procedural issue, not a financial one.
Christian was paid. A formatting error occurred during the transfer of documents from Google Sheets to Excel for submission, which was corrected in less than a minute. No other individual received Christian’s payment, and even if such an error had occurred, it would not have been the result of any action on my part.
Finally, Ava and I did not discuss Christian’s stipend or anyone else’s compensation. I am unclear why this claim appeared in the article, and even more unclear why it was attributed to me. Christian can independently confirm this.
Accuracy matters, particularly when discussing student governance and public trust, and I hope this clarification helps ensure readers have a complete and correct understanding of how SGA’s budget process operates.
