University Apartments open to undergraduate students
University Apartments are now open to undergraduate students, according to Central Michigan University's spokesperson.
Central Michigan University undergraduate students now have an opportunity to live in University Apartments, formerly known as Graduate Housing, in the 2026-27 school year.
"With on-campus enrollment changes and new offerings in the local community, occupancy rates in CMU's Graduate Housing complex have changed," Executive Director of Strategic Communications Ari Harris said. "At the same time, we knew there was an appetite among undergraduate students."
According to Harris, the decision to allow students to live in an apartment-style housing on campus followed the closure of Kewadin and Northwest apartments. Before this, only graduate students lived in Graduate Housing.
Students can choose the apartment-style on-campus housing option if they fulfill their two-year residence requirement in the dorms, said Associate Director of Residence Life Alex Martinez.
The CMU Board of Trustees renamed the Graduate Housing to University Apartments in September of 2025 to reflect the population of students who will be eligible to live in these facilities, Harris stated.
"Over the past several years, we have been enhancing on-campus style residential communities to provide students with many options for living at CMU," Harris said. "For example, the upgrades to Carey Hall, Troutman Hall have been incredibly popular."
In addition, CMU is preparing for similar enhancements for Merrill Hall, Harris said. Merrill Hall, which is located in South Community, is scheduled to be remodeled starting in the fall of 2026 and will be offline, according to Martinez.
Central Michigan Life previously reported that Merrill's renovations will include updating finishes, flooring, windows and completing deferred maintenance.
