CMU brings students together in new medical facility opening 2028

Central Michigan University’s upcoming medical facility is the new home of the university’s medical education program to bring students in the track together.
The 90,000 square-foot facility in Saginaw is expected to welcome students in the fall of 2028. The fundraising is on track to meet its $100 million goal.
The facility known as the MyMichigan Health CMU Medical Education Building will bring most medical students together, according to a CMU press release on August 3. Currently, first- and second-year students attend the Mount Pleasant campus while most third- and fourth-year students who attend in Saginaw.
“Bringing the majority of our students, faculty and staff together in one geographic location will greatly strengthen medical education at CMU,” Joshua Nosanchuk, M.D., dean of the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine, said in a MyMichigan Health press release.
The facility will become a four-year experience for students in the program, which will encourage greater learning and mentorship, Nosanchuk said. It will also bring them closer to their health care partners' (Covenant HealthCare and MyMichigan) campuses.
Nosanchuk said it will connect students to the local community and health partners, “strengthening ties by providing students opportunities to learn with them and from them.”
Nosanchuk said even as the college shifts its medical program to Saginaw, there will still be a strong medical presence in the Mount Pleasant campus. He said clinical health services will still be provided and they will continue to enhance health and wellness throughout the community.
“As a college, our mission is to educate and train physicians to provide comprehensive care to underserved populations here in Michigan,” Nosanchuk said.
According to the press release, the building’s design will have various facilities to promote teaching and learning between faculty and students.
“We have adopted an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to health and wellness, and our classrooms, centers, meeting rooms and interactive spaces reflect that approach,” Nosanchuk said.
The facility will have a high-fidelity simulation room, anatomy teaching spaces, areas to encourage collaboration, a fitness center and more.
The campus will be located on the MyMichigan Medical Center Saginaw campus at the intersection of Holden Street and South Franklin Street. Nosanchuk said the groundbreaking ceremony is at the construction site on September 22, 2026.
