Students can vote in hometowns

Despite recent amendments to the Michigan Vehicle Code, students can still vote in the city they are registered.
This is possible even if the addresses on a student's voter registration and driver's license does not match, said Mount Pleasant City Clerk Rob Flynn.
Public Act 118 of 1999 went into effect April 1, Flynn said. The act amended the Michigan Code so that a person's address on their voter registration and driver's license must match.
However, this act will not affect voters until they renew their drivers' licenses, he said.
For those students that are registered to vote in Mount Pleasant and have their home address on the license, the voter registration address will be changed to the home address, Flynn said.
If students decide to change the address on their license to Mount Pleasant, they will remain a registered voter there, he said.
"They're not going to go into everyone's file and change their voter registration," Flynn said.
Students who are living in Mount Pleasant and are registered voters at their home address can still vote in their home elections by absentee ballot, he said.
