Famous improv troupe to return to CMU
Get ready to laugh - Second City is coming to town.
The famous improvisational theater troupe from Chicago will perform at 8 p.m. today at Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.
The show is titled "Deface the Nation" and is expected to be full of politically-charged improv comedy and satire.
Tickets are already on sale at $5 for students and $10 for public.
Second City not only performs shows, but also trains incoming entertainers.
The group's alumni include names such as Chris Farley, Steve Carell, Mike Myers, Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert. The show will give students a chance to see potential rising stars.
Second City came to CMU in 2007 and was asked to return by CMU Program Board.
"They're well known and they always do a very good variety that keeps college students interested in the show," said Pinconning sophomore Crysta Heckman, Program Board comedy chair. "We've had kids ask when they were coming back, and when I told them that they were coming, they got ecstatic."
Heckman said she is happy CMU students will have a chance to see professional comedians.
"I love finding ways to make people laugh, and there's no better way to do that than to be a comedy chair and bring it to the entire campus," Heckman said.
The show's theme is also timely because of the presidential debates. Milan senior Kelsey Moran, vice president of Program Board, hopes Second City will add an edge of fun to the political atmosphere.
"One reason we brought them is because they do a show about poking fun at politics, and what's better than lighting up the situation than comedy?" she said. "I think this will just be something to lighten the mood."
Easing political tensions is exactly what Damon Brown, coordinator of student activities, had in mind.
"We see all these negative political ads on TV today," Brown said. "I hope students have a chance to come, have a good time, relax and learn about the funnier side of politics. It should be a great event."
