The wrestling team kicked off their season with the Maroon and Gold intersquad match Friday in Rose Arena.

Senior 125-pounder Matt Steintrager opened his season with an upset over the expected starter senior Conor Beebe.

“Its my last year so it is very important to me to get a chance to start,” Steintrager said. “Conor had to cut a lot of weight and he is a very good wrestler. I thought I wreslted well, but we have more important people to beat then each other.”

The opening match for the Chippewas acts as a stepping stool for coach Tom Borrelli to make his decision on the starting lineup during the regular season.

Redshirt freshman 174-pounder Ben Bennett impressed the home crowd in his first appearance in Rose Arena with the only technical fall of the match.

“This is only the beginning of the development of our starting lineup,” Borrelli said. “We use the wrestle-offs and the regular season performances to decide who we are going to send to the national tournament.”

Sophomore heavyweight Jarod Trice also had an impressive performance with a pin in the first period, the only one of the match.

“We looked really good tonight,” Trice said. “We are tough and can finish in the top four in the country.”
