Sports Update: Women's basketball loses home opener

The women’s basketball team lost a close game, 65-61, to the University of Loyola-Chicago Saturday in their regular season home opener at Rose Arena.

For the second straight game, CMU found itself trying to dig out of an early first half deficit.

The Chippewas trailed by 16 points with one minute remaining in the half but went on a 6-0 nothing run to cut the Loyola lead to 36-26 at the half. The team took their first, and only, lead of the game at the 11:45 mark of the second half but could not sustain it.

With the loss, CMU moves to 0-3 overall in the season.

“It was a very disappointing loss,” said coach Sue Guevara. “We really have to re-focus on what we do in practice.”

Senior forward Britni Houghton and junior guard Shonda Long each scored 15 points for the Chippewas.

Senior guard Maggie McCloskey had 11 points for Loyola-Chicago (2-1).

The team will play Georgetown at noon Wednesday in Rose Arena.
