Union Township supervisor race ends in a tie, winner to be declared Monday

Nearly one month after the Nov. 6 election and following a long recount process, the Union Township supervisor race resulted in a tie today.

Incumbent Supervisor John Barker, a Democrat, tied with his Republican challenger, Russ Alwood, with 1,633 votes each.

On Monday, the two will draw a slip of paper out of a box for the position at the Isabella County building at 2 p.m. One sheet of paper will read "elected," while the other will read "not elected."

As previously reported by Central Michigan Life, the November results had Barker winning by three votes, 1,631 to 1,628.

Barker has served as Union Township supervisor since his election in 2008.

Another extremely close recount resulted in incumbent County Commissioner Roger Trudell defeating his Democratic challenger, Tom Riley, by one vote, 1,848 to 1,847. Trudell represents District 3, which encompasses Coe, Fremont and Lincoln townships and the southern portion of Chippewa Township.
