BRIEF: Students would be alerted of campus emergency through Central Alert system

Rumors of an on-campus shooting spread rapidly following the discovery of a 63-year-old man's body on University Street.

Those rumors turned out to be false, but Lt. Cameron Wassman of the Central Michigan University Police Department helped to clarify exactly how students would be informed in the event of an on-campus shooting.

"In the event of any campus emergency, the primary way of communication is through the Central Alert system," he said.

CentralAlert, an opt-in emergency notification system, alerts students, faculty and staff if an emergency occurs that might delay operations or close the university. According to Wassman, emails, phone calls and text messages are sent out in the case of any emergency, including a shooting.

"It's important for (students) to sign up for these alerts if they want to receive them," he said.
