History club prepares for comedy show fundraiser
All jokes aside, History Club is looking for comedians.
The club at Central Michigan University held auditions this weekend, looking for student comedians to perform at a stand-up comedy show fundraiser being held on Nov. 15.
“It’s not really an audition. Anyone who wants to do some stand-up can do stand-up at the show,” said Grand Haven senior Brittany Hild, president of the club. “We just want an idea of what they might say and if it might be too offensive or inappropriate.”
The acts do not have to be clean, family friendly content. Seeing as the show will be full of aspiring college comedians, foul language will probably not be uncommon, Hild said.
Interest in the show is still loose and seemingly unknown. The club was contacted by several students who said they were interested in performing in the show, but had yet to audition as of Nov. 2.
This is the first time the club has put together a comedy show as a fundraiser, so much of the planning is still in the works. They are not fully certain how much to charge, if anything at all, for the show and might instead ask for donations or have a small admission fee along with asking for donations.
“We were thinking of charging $5, but we’re not set on that yet," said Marshall senior Avery Banister, treasurer for the club. "We’ll have a final number before we start posting ads around campus for the show.”
Plymouth junior Nicholas Sternberg was the first to audition for the show, eagerly jumping onstage and giving his best for the first time ever.
“This is my first time on stage doing comedy,” Sternberg said. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do but Mount Pleasant doesn’t seem like it has much of a comedy scene, so it’s hard to get some practice doing comedy.”
The funds raised by the show go toward financing club events such as trips to historical areas of Michigan and museums.
The comedy show will be held from from 7-10 p.m. on Nov. 15. in Pearce 127.
