Associate director of Facilities Management Administration Steve Lawrence cuts the ribbon for the "Ride the Pink Elevator" campaign April 3, 2015 on the construction site of the Biosciences Building.

Outfitted in pink vests and construction hats, representatives from the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Metro Elevator Company gathered at the $95 million Biosciences Building on April 3 for the ceremonious launch of their "Ride the Pink Elevator" campaign.

The elevator will be used during the construction of the Biosciences Building. It will remain in place until early July. Clark Constrcution Company and all of their subcontractors will pledge $1 for every time the elevator is used. This is the second pink elevator in the U.S.

Roger Brummett, executive vice president of Metro Elevator Co., said the company is working with the Komen Foundation to host similar campaigns throughout North America.

Brummett holds a personal connection to the campaign and Komen Foundation.

"Both my wife and I lost a grandmother to breast cancer," he said. "This was a collaborative idea."

Jennifer Jurgens, executive director of the Komen Foundation in Michigan, said the campaign will cause more awareness of breast cancer amongst men. The elevator will remain in place for 90 days. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised will be donated to the Michigan branch of the Komen Foundation, and 25 percent will go to their national organization.

"I am a breast cancer survivor," Jurgens said. "This campaign means a lot to me."

A donation portal has been opened for those interested in supporting the campaign at komen.org/pinkelevator.
