Since September, the Central Michigan track and field team has been preparing for Friday’s season opener at the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open.

The men’s and women’s begin field events at 2:30 p.m. and running events at 4 p.m.

“The athletes have put in 12 weeks of conditioning and training,” said Head Coach Mark Guthrie. “(They) and are excited to have a meet experience to see where they are in their training for this time of year.”

The focus of this meet will be the distance runners, as they are coming off from the cross country season already in race shape.

“For our distance runners, the meet provides us an opportunity to chase the Mid-American Conference qualifying standard in the 5,000 meters prior to backing their training down into a short recovery phase,” Guthrie said.

In Guthrie’s third season as head coach, the goal for the season is steady improvement and contention in the conference, regional and national meets.

“The goal is for the team to continue to make progress in individual performances, get closer as a team since track involved numerous disciplines, and be prepared to compete well at the conference, regional and national levels,” Guthrie said.
