Baseball loses game one in DeKalb

The Chippewas dropped game one of the three-game series Friday in DeKalb, Illinois as the Northern Illinois Huskies won 9-6.

NIU struck first in the second inning after a wild throw by junior catcher Robert Greenman allowed a Huskie to score.

CMU came back in the fourth after an RBI single by freshman second baseman Jason Sullivan. After another single and a walk loaded the bases, junior first baseman Alex Borglin had an RBI on a fielder's choice.

NIU took back the lead in the fifth inning after a two-run single with two outs. The Huskies got another RBI single with their next at-bat.

CMU senior starting pitcher Sean Renzi went five innings and gave up five runs on four hits and four walks. It was his second straight start with four walks.

Renzi started for CMU against NIU last season. He gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks in five innings of work. Renzi and the Chippewas won that game 14-2.

After giving up one run in the sixth and seventh innings, the Chippewas took back one of those runs after a fielding error by NIU's right fielder. But the Huskies scored three in their half of the eighth inning to push their lead up to six runs.

CMU got three runs back on a three-run home run by sophomore left fielder Daniel Jipping.

The series continues tomorrow in DeKalb as the Chippewas and Huskies have a doubleheader slated for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
