The Mount Pleasant City Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Monday on the proposed Brownfield Plan Amendment and Tax Increment Finance Capture Plan for the Mt. Pleasant Center.

The City of Mount Pleasant Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved the plan amendment on May 13, pursuant to Public Acts 381 of 1996, as amended.

The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority helps provide the Mount Pleasant Economic Development Corporation with assistance with the redevelopment of the city's environmentally contaminated or structurally or economically obsolete sites.

Site 17, the Mt. Pleasant Center property at 1400 W. Pickard Road., is owned by the city. It initially consisted of 21 buildings, totaling more than 500,000 square feet of space. According to the city's website, some of the buildings are "in extreme disrepair."

"Several contain asbestos and lead paint; others have been closed or vacant for decades," the website states. "Two parcels of the property are owned by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and are comprised of former Mt. Pleasant Indian Industrial Boarding School buildings and a Native American cemetery."

A 2009 appraisal concluded the property's existing facilities ranged in conditions from average to poor, with many requiring immediate demolition, according to the website.

Monday's meeting will be held in the City Commission Room in City Hall at 320 W. Broadway St.
