Guevara welcomes local high school standout to women's hoops team

Central Michigan women's basketball coach Sue Guevara added another piece to the team's 2016-17 roster Monday.

Guevara announced Averi Gamble, a Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy alumnus, joined the team for the upcoming season. Gamble is a 6-foot-3 center who helped lead Sacred Heart to the Class D State Championship in 2014, and also earned the Class D Player of the Year Award from Associated Press for the 2015-16 season.

She scored more than 1,200 points during her career with the Irish. She also earned four varsity letters in basketball and three in volleyball. She was named the Morning Sun Player of the Year in 2016.

"She knows how to work — she's a very hard worker," Guevara said. "She knows how to win and our players have really embraced her. She's going to benefit from this and so are we. I'm just really happy to have her."

Averi is the daughter of Kevin Gamble, former NBA player and current assistant with the CMU men's basketball team.
