Program Board holds annual holiday Pinterest party

Program Board hosted their annual Holiday Themed Pinterest Party to kick off the holiday season Monday night in the Bovee University Rotunda.

Several tables were set up with various crafts and snack food. Activities included making mason jar ornaments, candy bar sleighs, Christmas sugar scrubs, hair bows and coloring snowflakes.

“Everyone seems to really like crafting and Christmas-holiday presents. Why not combine them and make a free event to come to and get into the spirit?” said Rachel Gran, a junior and Program Board special events co-director. “This one has been highly received and requested.”

The event had more than 100 participants throughout the evening.

Program Board puts on at least one pinterest parties each semester. Although the winter holiday one is the most traditional, other events have included themes such as Harry Potter, Central Michigan University Pride (Fire Up), ‘90s Throwback and Spring Fever.

“They are very popular and probably the biggest event that we have special event wise,” said Marissa Mattioli, a junior and Program Board special events co-director.

Some students attended not just to get into the holiday spirit, but as an affordable way to decorate their homes.

Freshman Olivia Clayton came not only an interest in crafting, but a desire to furnish her dorm room for the season’s festivities.

“We already have a little tree set up in our room so this is just going to help us deck (it out) a little bit more,” Clayton says.

Craft supplies were free to students, as were cups of hot chocolate and cookies students could decorate.

Freshman Emily Wessel said she was impressed with the event, discovering it to be the perfect way to dive into the “Christmas cheer.”

Angie Distelrath, a junior and Program Board executive director, said there are therapeutic effects to crafting.

“It’s really going to help students relax and just chill out before everyone gets very stressed out for finals,” she said.

Program Board sets for the event approximately a month in advance. Preparations include ordering and budgeting supplies, selecting crafts through Pinterest and overall creating an idea of what the event will look like.

The biggest challenge is finding projects that are young adult oriented, affordable and not demanding.

Rachel Gran said the Christmas theme created had an almost intimidating surplus of options to select from.

“We honestly just go on Pinterest and try to find the best crafts,” she said. “For this, it was just kind of finding stuff that was more college-age geared.”
