Women's basketball's winning streak ends with loss to Purdue

Ending its five-game winning streak, the Central Michigan women's basketball team fell 62-51 to Purdue on Tuesday night at Mackey Arena.

After trailing by 16 points, CMU came back in the fourth quarter with a jump shot from sophomore forward Reyna Frost and two three-pointers from junior guard Cassie Breen.

Although her Chippewas put up a fight in the second half, Head Coach Sue Guevara said her team struggled with scoring and keeping a consistent defense.

"We just didn’t make one offensive goal tonight at all," she said. "Defensively, we have to be consistent from the very beginning of the game to the end of it."

The Boilermakers (6-4) — who won five of their last six games — challenged the Chippewas (6-3) with a defense ranking third in the Big Ten in points allowed at 58.1 per game.

Purdue's freshman guard Dominique Oden led both teams in scoring with 17 points. Bridget Perry led the Boilermakers with nine rebounds.

"We had trouble scoring the ball," Guevara said. "When you have trouble scoring, then your defense and your rebounding needs to be there and we gave up 18 offensive rebounds."

Junior forward Tinara Moore and sophomore guard Presley Hudson led the Chippewas with 12 points apiece. Senior forward Jewel Cotton added 11 points and six rebounds. Moore and Frost each had seven rebounds.

The Chippewas will return to McGuirk Arena Friday night when they take on Saint Joseph's (2-5) in a non-conference game at 7 p.m.
