Women's basketball returns home hoping to stay perfect in MAC play

After winning its second road game and third overtime game of the season, the Central Michigan women's basketball team returns home to take on Miami (Ohio).

The Chippewas will host the RedHawks at 7 p.m. Wednesday at McGuirk Arena. CMU is looking for its 10th home win on the year and sixth consecutive Mid-American Conference victory.

For Head Coach Sue Guevara, specific defensive areas is what the team needs to improve on in order to keep their opponents from scoring in high numbers.

“We have to do a better job of getting out on the perimeter and contesting shots,” Guevara said. “I don’t care what their shooting percentage is, we have to do a better job of getting a hand in their face, and eliminating turnovers is another number we want to lower.”

Opponents have shot 41 percent from the field against the Chippewas this season, while shooting 36.5 percent from 3-point distance. While CMU is forcing over 15 turnovers per game, CMU is also committing 15 turnovers as well.

Last week, CMU (13-4, 5-0) shot 49.3 percent from the field, which is right around where Guevara wants them to be at for every game (50 percent). They will continue to look to sophomore guard Presley Hudson to help those numbers. Hudson was named the MAC West Division player of the week for the third consecutive week.

Hudson is now leading the team in scoring, averaging just over 20 points per game. In four of the last five games, the sophomore has scored at least 34 points and is now shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 41.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Hudson said she also believes that the team needs to work on defense more as the season moves along.

“Definitely defensively we need to get more stops and work on containing players from a one on one stand point,” she said. “The help side defense also needs some work, and we just need to stay consistent on offense.”

For this upcoming game against Miami (7-11, 1-4 MAC) Guevara said her team can’t come in and take this game lightly.

“This is a team that's coming in pretty hungry, trying to sneak one on the road,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of respect for them and what they are doing. They need a couple breaks. I just don’t want those breaks to come against us.”
