Owens elected SGA president for 2017-18 academic year

Midland senior Anna Owens was elected as Student Government Association president for the upcoming 2017-18 academic year.

Owens currently serves as SGA vice president. She and her running mate, sophomore Derek Sturvist, were chosen by the student body during an election between March 28 and April 4.

Current SGA President Jazmin Biernat added that 1,588 students voted in the presidential election.

Owens was elected over Treasurer Luke Anderson and House Leader Cody Van Buren. Sophomore Galen Miller served as Anderson's running mate, while Senate Leader Emilee Madison ran with Van Buren.

Junior Mike DeGregory was elected as treasurer. All 15 senators on the ballot were also elected. A total of 1,032 people voted for DeGregory, Biernat said, while a total of 989 votes were cast for senators.

The SGA Presidential Inauguration is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 24 in the Powers Ballroom. Those interested in attending can RSVP on the SGA Orgsync page by April 18.
