The Ultimate Checklist of Mount Pleasant Hot Spots

You know when you’re driving down Mission and you find yourself saying, “I NEED to go to that place before I graduate. I wonder if it’s any good”? Well, what better time than the present?

We’ve all made plenty of goals for 2018, and these stops should definitely be at the top of the list. If you’re not sure where to start, don’t worry. I’ve come up with a list of 5 signature menu items from Mount Pleasant’s undercover hot spots.

Taco Boy

The sign out front says it all: “Taco Boy: Home of the Super Burrito!” Typical fast food chains can get boring and honestly gross. That’s why the Mount Pleasant gods blessed us with Taco Boy: a place where all of your mexican food dreams come true. Choose any variation of the super burrito; the only regret you’ll have is not coming here sooner.

What to get: Super Wet Burrito.  “For first time customers we always suggest the Super Wet Burritos, which is what we are known for. One thing people should know is that we make everything fresh from scratch daily,” said owner Robert Baltierrez. It wouldn’t be a trip to Taco Boy without this big  burrito filled with taco meat, enchilada sauce, lettuce, tomato, cheese and onions. Trust me, there’s a reason it’s part of the slogan.

Jon’s Country Burgers

Us college students are busy people, so we don’t have time to sit around and wait for food. Luckily, this drive-in has great service, delicious food and you don’t even have to get out of your car!

What to get: Big John’s Countryburger. It’s what they do best. Here you’ll find two 2.5 ounce patties topped with lettuce, two slices of cheese, pickles and salad dressing. They’ve been making this classic burger for more than 60 years, and everything is homemade and starts from scratch. Do yourself a favor and trade in a boring Big Mac for a delicious Big John Countryburger.

Pixie Restaurant

If you’ve visited one of the many Coney Island franchises, you know the pain of not having one around CMU - unless you visit Pixie’s. This restaurant serves all of your favorite American foods and fulfills your coney dog cravings. It even has a fun old-school diner theme.

What to get: Hound Dog. “You ain’t nothin’ until you’ve had a Hound Dog from Pixie,” said Elvis Presley… or something like that. This meal is two Pixie coney dogs, topped with their famous chili sauce, onions and mustard. Go ahead and treat yourself to some one-of-a-kind Pixie dogs.

Pizza King

Everyone knows there’s an endless number of pizza places in Mount Pleasant, but Pizza King is a breath of fresh air among food chains. The pizza is delicious and prices are convenient, so you’ll no longer have to choose between dinner or a tank of gas. They’ve got specials all week long, with my personal favorite, two medium one-topping pizzas for less than $12.

What to get: Deluxe Specialty Pizza. This is the ultimate pizza topped with pepperoni, ham, mushrooms, green peppers, onions and ground beef - all for just $9.20 for a 10-inch pizza.

Great Wall Buffet

Okay, picture this. It’s a Friday afternoon and you don’t have classes or obligations for the rest of the day. You’re still a little hungover from last night. What sounds like the best thing ever? That’s right: endless chinese food. Don’t ask questions, just go to Great Wall Buffet for all you can eat deliciousness.

What to get: literally anything. All you have to do is pick up a plate and dive in. “There’s nothing better than soaking up last night’s sins with a bottomless chinese buffet,” said Noah Curtis, graduate student, Whitehall, MI. It’s like being back at the freshman dining halls… but way better.

You and your stomach will thank me later.
