A Central Michigan University student was caught trying to steal a $90 phone accessory from the CMU Bookstore last Wednesday, and several drug violations were reported across Mount Pleasant. The following incidents were among those handled by the Central Michigan University and Mount Pleasant police departments from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2.

Aug. 29

Just before 5 p.m., CMUPD officers were dispatched to the CMU Bookstore to investigate the possible theft of a phone case with an attached battery charger, valued at about $90. The suspect was spotted making the theft and identified via surveillance video, said Lt. Cameron Wassman of the CMUPD. Officers made contact with the suspect, a 21-year-old male, who admitted to taking the phone case. The suspect was issued an appearance citation for retail fraud in the third degree.

Aug. 30

At 2 a.m., MPPD officers were dispatched to the 800 block of W. Broomfield Street after multiple calls regarding a disorderly male. Officers arrived to observe the suspect outside of Chip Village Apartments walking back and forth and shouting. The man was using vulgar language and officers believe he was trying to draw someone out of the apartment building to fight him. Upon questioning, the man said he was upset with some of the apartment's residents for the way they treated his brother. The suspect's slurred speech and lack of coordination indicated to the officers that he was intoxicated, which he admitted to. The officers offered to drive the man back to his apartment in Campus Habitat, but he declined and started to walk away. The man returned about 30 minutes later and began yelling again, after which officers returned and placed him under arrest for disorderly conduct.

Sept. 2

The odor of marijuana was noticed by residential assistants in Cobb Residence Hall. Officers made contact with the 18-year-old male resident of the room from which the odor was coming from, who admitted to having marijuana, and turned over 2.1 grams of the substance. The case was turned over to the Office of Student Conduct, Wassman said.

At about 10 p.m., officers were dispatched to Thorpe Residence Hall due to reports of marijuana odor by hall staff. Officers made contact with two suspects within the room the odor was coming from. The suspects were an 17-year-old male, who lived in the room, and an 18-year-old female. Wassman said the male suspect admitted to having a "vape pipe" and a small amount of THC liquid. The case was turned over to the Office of Student Conduct.
