Register to vote with ease: mobile SOS on campus Monday

The Registered Student Organization Register, Educate, Vote and the campus coalition Central Votes have partnered to bring a mobile Secretary of State to campus to make voter registration easier for students.

The mobile station will be parked outside the UC from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 10. Students will be able to use their Michigan state ID or CMU ID to register to vote in upcoming elections.

REV President Winnie Walsh said a common reason students choose not to vote is that they think they must vote in person if it’s their first time voting. But what many don’t know, she said, is that registering to vote in person makes the voter exempt from the rule.

“This law is particularly challenging for college students because most students do not want to change their permanent address in order to vote in Mt. Pleasant, but they cannot drive home on Election Day due to class and work,” Walsh said.

Voting at the mobile SOS counts as registering in person, so students who register will be immediately eligible for absentee ballots and can register with their home town rather than their Mount Pleasant address.
