Former Senator Jonathan Korpi stepped down from his position in the Central Michigan University Student Government Association.

The Ishpeming graduate student was a representative of the history department in the Senate.

His resignation followed the Nov. 5 Senate meeting, where the former senator allegedly "snapped" at several other members of the Senate.

Korpi stated that he cut off other senators in a moment of heated discussion. He has since sent a letter of apology to SGA, which was read aloud by President Jake Hendricks at the Nov. 12 Senate meeting. Korpi stated in the letter that Hendricks' request for him to step down was "a good move."

Hendricks has since released the following statement in regards to the resignation:

"It is not uncommon for passionate discussions to occur in the heat of the moment during SGA. (Korpi) has since apologized for the way he handled his disagreement during the Senate meeting, and reached out to us stating he would like to make a public apology. We wish him the best in his continued involvements on campus."

Korpi also stepped down from his position as a student representative on Academic Senate.

SGA will hold emergency elections in January 2019 to fill positions that have been left by former senators, Vice President Lyndi Rose said.

Korpi said he will not seek involvement with SGA or Academic Senate in the future.
