"Small Business Saturday" will take place in Mount Pleasant on Saturday, Nov. 24 to promote shopping locally.

Small business Saturday is a nationwide event put on by American Express in efforts to help promote small businesses.

The American Express website states that consumers play a key role in the life of a local business. So, they encourage "shopping small."

According to the American Express website, Small Business Saturday was first introduced in November 2010. It states shopping small helps communities "thrive" and stay "vibrant."

The event occurs annually on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving in efforts to bring more holiday shopping to local businesses that make up communities.

Mount Pleasant special events coordinator, Melinda Salchert, said Small business Saturday prompts people to shop small rather than at big box stores.

Salchert said many Mount Pleasant stores offer their own specials and promotions. Some even have activities inside of the store.

"It really is an opportunity for businesses to get as creative as they want," Salchert said.

For example, Soldan's Pet Supplies will offer gift cards for customers as well as dog food tasting for pets. Karma Kat Cafe will have holiday specials to go along with gift certificates.
