Central Michigan offensive line coach Derek Frazier talks with the media on Aug. 29 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Derek Frazier was one of three coaches to make it through the coaching change from John Bonamego to Jim McElwain.

On Jan. 24, Frazier "definitely played a key role" for Foothill College (JUCO) offensive tackle Jake Dominguez when he signed his national letter of intent to sign with the Chippewas as a transfer.

Just one day later, on Jan. 25, Frazier joined the New York Jets coaching staff, as reported first by FootballScoop.com. Since then, members of the CMU Athletic Department confirmed the change.

Dominguez said he had no clue that Frazier was even considering another position, especially after spending an entire weekend with him on his official visit from Jan. 18-20.

The Jets hired Frank Pollack as their offensive line coach on Jan. 21, so the capacity of Frazier's hiring remains unclear. Pollack spent 2018 as the offensive line coach for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Frazier was hired at CMU prior to the 2015 season, which made the 1-11 campaign in 2018 his fourth under Bonamego. Two seasons in, the run game coordinator title was added to his offensive line coach duties.

Prior to his arrival at CMU, Frazier spent three seasons as the offensive line coach at Colorado State. Prior to then, he worked at Fresno State (2006-11, 2003-04), Northern Arizona (2005-06), Adams State College (2001) and Nichols College (2000) in a variety of roles.

Under McElwain, Frazier helped finalize an impressive 2019 class, add a few transfers and dish out a plethora of offers to those in the 2020, 2021 and 2022 classes to help further CMU's efforts on the recruiting trail.

Then, he departed for unknown reasons on Jan. 25.

The only remaining members of Bonamego's staff are tight ends coach Tavita Thompson and cornerbacks coach Cory Hall.

CMU's coaching staff, along with Thompson and Hall, currently includes quarterbacks coach Charlie Frye, wide receivers coach Kevin Barbay, defensive coordinator Robb Akey, linebackers coach Mark DeBastiani, and special teams coordinator and safeties coach Ryan Beard.
