Canned goods sit on the newly opened student food pantry on Nov. 19 near Robinson Hall.

The Central Michigan University Student Food Pantry will open for distribution on Aug. 30 from 2-4 p.m. Located between Robinson and Caulkins Hall, the pantry provides food for all enrolled students.

The food pantry was created last fall through the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center in an effort to battle food insecurity. It provides a range of food including cereal, snacks, pasta, dairy products, frozen meat, fresh produce and canned soups, fruits, and vegetables.

“I hope the food pantry will act as a resource for students in need of food assistance,” said Kourtney Koch, graduate assistant for the food pantry. “I hope it will help students to be more successful inside and outside of the classroom.”

Normal hours will begin next week, with the pantry open every Tuesday 5-7 p.m., Wednesday 3-5 p.m. and Friday 12-2 p.m.

According to a report by researchers at Temple University in conjunction with the Wisconsin HOPE Lab, approximately 36 percent of college students experience food insecurity. Last year the pantry served over 200 students in approximately 600 visits, but Koch hopes to reach a 1,000 students this year.
