Head Coach Keno Davis talks to his team during a timeout on Dec. 22 at McGuirk Arena.

Central Michigan men's basketball coach Keno Davis is sticking around the program for the next five years.

Davis agreed to an extension that pays him a base salary of $319,923 per year, and it will expire 10 days after the final game of the 2023-24 season, as detailed in his contract obtained by Central Michigan Life through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The eighth-year head coach's contract was originally set to expire following the 2019-20 campaign with a $300,000 base salary. He gets a $19,923 raise.

Now, CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford has placed Davis in charge of the Chippewas for five more seasons.

Davis will make $100,000 in a bonus per season for television, radio and promotional appearances, just as he did with his prior contract.

Regardless of what happens to the team, Davis is set to make a total of $419,923 for each season over the next five years.

Under Davis, who has been the coach since the 2012-13 campaign, the Chippewas have never won the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship nor have they made the NCAA Tournament.

In his seven full seasons, Davis is 121-109 (.543) overall and 52-72 (.419) in the MAC.

Davis' top season was in 2014-15 when the Chippewas were 23-9 overall and 12-6 in the conference. The team finished first in the MAC West Division but didn't win the conference tournament.

The 47-year-old has coached in four postseason events – the 2015 NIT (first round loss), 2016 CIT (first round loss), 2018 CIT (quarterfinal loss) and 2019 CBI (first round loss).

Here are the other ways Davis can make additional cash each season with his new deal:

– CMU has a winning record: $7,500.

– CMU wins 20 or more games: $10,000.

– CMU is the Mid-American Conference West Division regular season champion: $10,000.

– Davis is named MAC Coach of the Year or NABC Coach of the Year: $10,000.

– If CMU wins the MAC Tournament title or regular season championship, Davis will earn $10,000. If the Chippewas take both the tournament and regular season crown, Davis will get one payment of $15,000.

– If CMU makes the NCAA Tournament, Davis will receive an extra $10,000. He would also earn an extra $15,000 for making it to the Round of 32, $20,000 for the Sweet 16, $25,000 for the Elite 8, $30,000 for the Final Four, $40,000 for the National Championship. If the Chippewas can win the championship, Davis will receive an additional $75,000.

– CMU participates in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT): $7,500.

– CMU has an NCAA single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) above 985: $10,000.

– CMU's average paid attendance exceeds 2,500 for a specific season: $5,000.

– For each home men's basketball game that is sold out in a specific season: $2,500.

– CMU finishes the regular season in the Top 25 AP or Coaches Poll: $10,000.

If Davis is terminated without cause, the university's buy-out is $1 million (2019-20), $500,000 (2020-21), $400,000 (2021-22), $300,000 (2022-23) and $200,000 (2023-24).

Davis' buy-out, if he were to take a different position before the contract expires, is the same amount as the university's buy-out for each year.

The most recent extension Davis earned came from former CMU Athletic Director Dave Heeke in 2015. This is the first extension Davis has received from Alford.
