October was named National Cybersecurity Awareness Month by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and computer industry to help Americans have a safer and more secure cyber experience.

Central Michigan University is celebrating Cybersecurity Awareness Day Friday, Oct. 11.

“This is an opportunity to make people aware of problems that are in the industry, as well as different areas where cybersecurity is an issue,” said business information systems faculty member Susan Helser.

The day will start off with a Cybersecurity Experts Panel at 9 a.m. in Grawn Hall room 100. The panel will feature professionals from PNC Bank, Dow Chemical, the Mako Group, ROTC and CMU.

After the panel, there will be a 30-minute expert meet-and-greet at 11 a.m. in the Grawn Hall Atrium.

The final event for Cybersecurity Day will be an online Capture the Flag tournament at 12:30 p.m. in Grawn Hall Room 201. Capture the flag is a euphemism for cyber war games that will give students experience with cybersecurity.

“This capture the flag will look like an outline of the world and will have certain clues,” said business information systems faculty member Denise McBride. “You click on this country and it will pop up a question and it will have a hint.”

Those interested in attending should register by Wednesday, Oct. 9.

The event is sponsored by the College of Business Administration.
