Central Michigan play-by-play broadcaster Don Chiodo died in a car crash Wednesday night.

Chiodo, 54, was a veteran member of the Chippewa Sports Network, calling games as a play-by-play broadcaster for football and men's basketball.

“I am truly devastated," said CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford in a statement. "Don was an important part of our athletics family and his passing is a great loss. Don was one of the fiercest advocates for all our programs and had a passion for telling the great stories of our student-athletes. Words can’t describe the hurt I feel for his family and they are in our thoughts and prayers. Don will always be remembered as the voice of the Chippewas, a legacy that will go on forever.”

He graduated from CMU in 1990 and served as the pregame and halftime show host for men's basketball from 1996-99.

Beginning in 2009, he served as a color analyst for CMU men's basketball games for two season before taking over as the play-by-play broadcaster.

Chiodo was also a financial advisor at Central Michigan Investment Services LPL since September 2004.

He was a host and play-by-play announcer at WCEN-Radio in Mount Pleasant from 1985-91 before taking a job as a play-by-play broadcaster for hockey, basketball and football in Traverse City for WTCM Radio until 1996.

Shortly after his time at WTCM Radio, Chiodo was employed at WNEM-TV in Saginaw from 1997-2002. He was a sports and news reporter at the station.

Chiodo also worked at a play-by-play announcer for Michigan Talk Radio for three years (2003-06) as well as a broadcaster for multiple sports at WMMI and WCZY from 2000-10.
