SGA President Jake Hendricks speaks at the fall showcase in the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium, Monday, Dec. 2, 2019.

Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association dedicated its Dec. 2 meeting to celebrate the work from fall semester and look ahead to what’s coming in spring.

Vice President Lyndi Rose updated the audience about a number of projects including her Menstrual Hygiene Product Initiative, which placed free tampons and pads in four campus bathrooms. Rose has been collecting data on how many of the products are taken and will present her findings to the Board of Trustees in February. She hopes the data will spur the university to support and expand the initiative.

Next fall is likely to be the debut of fall break, which will probably be on a Monday and Tuesday in mid-October, Rose said.

Rose also announced that she’d like to draft an affordable course materials initiative by the end of next semester, which will be modeled after a program at Oakland University. The program allows relatively expensive items, such as graphing calculators and clickers, to be donated and rented out to students as they need them.

House Leader Anna Whitwam announced that next semester will see amendments to parliamentary procedure to grease the wheels of debate. SGA abides by a system called “Robert’s rules of order” to regulate the conversations at its meetings, but Whitwam would like to see them become more relaxed and user-friendly. While Whitwam doesn’t yet know what form they’ll take, she said the changes will result in more debate being heard.

President Robert Davies speaks to SGA at the fall showcase in the Sarah and Daniel Opperman Auditorium, Dec. 2. Davies lauded SGA's work on initiatives such as fall break and free menstrual hygiene products, and reinforced his belief in student government.

Sustainability Committee Chair Kalli Walz said her committee is going to be working on two pieces of legislation next semester. One will target the use of plastic silverware in the Down Under Food Court, and another will encourage the creation of an online map of on-campus recycling locations.

The SGA fall showcase was the last meeting of the semester. The next SGA meeting will be on Jan. 13, 2020.
