How coronavirus is affecting CMU staff, students, alumni

CHINA – It had been 12 years since public relations faculty member Chunbo Ren had spent the Chinese New Year with his family in Yantai, Shandong Province, China.
Ren was excited to use the spring 2020 semester as an opportunity to both spend time with his family and do some research. It was not until Ren arrived in China for his sabbatical leave that he realized the looming health threat of coronavirus. Now, he’s not sure when he will be able to return to Mount Pleasant.

First confirmed COVID-19 case linked to MSU

On Friday, Michigan State University was notified of the first confirmed COVID-19 case related to the university, according to a post from MSU's Twitter.
The announcement follows the postponement of MSU's commencement ceremonies, as well as a complete transition to virtual instruction until the end of the semester, according to an email from MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.

International students fear coronavirus repercussions

MOUNT PLEASANT – Hongzhe Shu goes through a routine typical of most Central Michigan University students – he wakes up in his room, brushes his teeth and showers, eats breakfast and goes to class. In the evening, Shu, a senior from the Chinese province of Liaoning, does a kind of homework that most other students don't have to deal with.
Shu fills out a government form that records his body temperature and requires him to list any coronavirus symptoms. The form asks if he’s been in contact with anyone who has symptoms along with many other questions.
“I’m going back to China in May because I heard the virus will be controlled… before May,” Shu said. “I’m not sure if it will be controlled here.”

MSU President 'concerned,' 'troubled' by crowded EL bars amid COVID-19

President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. expressed concerns in a recent email about recent student lines outside East Lansing bars following the decision to suspend in-person classes due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
"I am very concerned and troubled by the photos and media coverage I’ve seen of crowded student lines at local East Lansing bars over the past few days," Stanley said in the email. "The spread of the novel coronavirus is very serious, and our students need to understand the critical importance of social distancing and how the virus can spread quickly in large crowds."

Coronavirus cases surge in multiple countries

DEARBORN – There are major updates with Wuhan’s coronavirus, now officially called COVID-19. The ‘COVI’ stands for the coronavirus, ‘D’ stands for disease, and the ‘19’ signifies 2019, the year it was discovered.
As of February 23, the global death toll of COVID-19 has risen to 2,458 and the number of confirmed cases now exceeds 78,572.

Oakland University suspends face-to-face classes for remainder of semester in response to coronavirus outbreak

OAKLAND – Campus administrators have announced that Oakland University will suspend face-to-face classes, effective at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, and continuing through the end of the semester Wednesday, April 25. The announcement comes less than 24 hours after the first two cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Michigan, in the neighboring counties of Oakland and Wayne.
Classes on Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13 will be canceled. Remote learning will go into effect on Monday, March 16.

COVID-19 pandemic interrupting student internships

OAKLAND – The spread of COVID-19 has taken hold of classes, moving learning into a solely online forum. Internship courses, however, may be the one exception.
The continuation of the winter 2020 semester’s internships is entirely in the hands of individual companies, and most have chosen to stick to the status quo — for now.

Ypsilanti Mayor declares State of Emergency, City Council to hold a special meeting

YPSILANTI — Ypsilanti Mayor Beth Bashert has declared a citywide state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a public notice made today, under the state of emergency, the city will be making “choices to protect the health of all our residents and visitors, with special attention to our most vulnerable residents including our elderly and people with pre-existing health conditions.”

Patient who tested positive for COVID-19 in treatment at U-M Hospital

YPSILANTI — A patient with a confirmed case of COVID-19 is being treated at the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor as of March 11, according to the University of Michigan Health System’s website.
As of today, two cases of Michigan residents testing positive for the Coronavirus have been announced by a coordinated statement by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Oakland County Health Division and Wayne County Health Department, according to the Michigan.gov press release.
