JCPenney in the Mt. Pleasant Shopping Center to close

JCPenney, located in the Mt. Pleasant Shopping Center on S. Mission Street, will be closing along with nearly 150 other locations.

On June 17, JCPenney announced 136 store closures. An additional 13 store closures, including the Mount Pleasant location, were announced to employees and customers on June 22.  

“While closing stores is always an extremely difficult decision, our store optimization strategy is vital to ensuring we emerge from both Chapter 11 and the COVID-19 pandemic as a stronger retailer with greater financial flexibility to allow us to continue serving our loyal customers for decades to come,” Jill Soltau, chief executive officer of JCPenney said in a June 4 press release. "All impacted associates will be treated with the utmost consideration and respect.”

There are 1,100 remaining JCPenney locations in the United States – 33 of those are in Michigan.  

The store's liquidation sale will begins July 2. The location is expected to close in September.

Due to COVID-19, the store hours have changed to Monday through Saturday 12-7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

"As of June 4, we have reopened nearly 500 stores since government officials have eased COVID-19 restrictions and we look forward to opening more," Soltau said in the press release.
