Gymnastics defeated by EMU despite strong finish on floor

Entering the final rotation trailing 145.325-146.975 against defending Mid-American Conference champions Eastern Michigan, head coach Jerry Reighard took a second to gather his team before the floor exercise began.CMU had just finished beam with a score of 48.075, and with less than stellar performances on vault and uneven bars, Reighard took the opportunity to rally his team for a strong finish on the floor."The message was that we had to stop the bleeding, and they all know what that means," Reighard said.

Katy Clements named MAC Gymnast of the Week

Following a performance that included two scores of 9.9 in the balance beam and floor exercise, Central Michigan's junior gymnast Katy Clements has been selected as the Mid- American Conference Gymnast of the Week. This is the first time the Georgia native has received the honor, while last season she was named Specialist of the Week in early March.In her career at CMU, Clements' most consistent event has been the balance beam, and her score this past Sunday of 9.9 was only .25 away from a career best in the event. Clements will be back on the beam at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Kalamazoo against Western Michigan for CMU's first conference meet of the season.

Gymnastics looks to regain the Mid-American Conference title

Although the season won’t start for another month, the Central Michigan gymnastics team has its eyes set on regaining the Mid-American Conference Championship. In 29 years as CMU's Head Coach, Jerry Reighard has led CMU to 14 MAC championships and also led the Chippewas to a winning record in 16 of the past 17 seasons.Last season, the Chippewas finished the year with a 12-3 record, finishing third in the MAC behind Eastern Michigan (1st) and Kent State (2nd) with a Conference record of 4-2.The Chippweas season ended in the NCAA Regionals last season with a fifth-place finish, placing above MAC-rival Kent State and finished the season ranked 33rd in the country. The key matchups for the Chippewas this season will be on the road against Kent State on Feb. 19, and at home against Rutgers on March 5. Kent State and Central Michigan have been at the top of the MAC for the better part of 20 years.
