Live Bands coming to town
This weekend brings the live local concert goer a few options to choose from as musical styles ranging from hard rock to acoustic covers to the soulfully original groove sound. The two main live music venues in town, The Bird Bar & Grille and Rubbles, will feature bands both tonight and tomorrow night.
Tonight at Rubbles, 112 W. Michigan St., will be the young rockers Giftus, from Clarkston. This power trio has been specializing in funky rock & roll with a very classic rock feel for over six years. The group started when the members were still all in high school, but their experience shows on stage as a much more matured demeanor, pleasing crowds all the while.
Jeremy Lafferty, guitarist and vocalist for Giftus, explained their original music as kind of like "the Red Hot Chili Peppers but a little heavier, more of a rock-out version of it," while citing influences such as Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Black Sabbath and Tool. The band also enjoys mixing up their sets, with several covers of classic hits by performers such as Hendrix.
The acclaimed Cincinatti-based modern rock fusion band Heavy Weather will perform Saturday night at Rubbles. The band's musically tasteful and memorable live shows have a very soulful and groove-oriented rhythmic funky rock sound with female vocal virtuosity.
Rubbles' 18 and over shows will begin at approximately 10:30 p.m., and a small cover charge is required for admission.
Tonight at The Bird, 223 S. Main St., the mainly acoustic soloist Just Chris will play a variety of hit cover songs by well known performers. Tomorrow night, The Bird will feature the hard rock band Minus Sarah, which plays a variety of modern rock hits with their own original material. These 18 and over shows will both begin at approximately 9 p.m., and a small cover charge is required for admission.
