Frisbee tournament to benefit domestic-violence victims

Frisbee enthusiasts can now toss the disc for a good cause.
The Alpha Chi Omega Sorority is hosting an Ultimate Frisbee Fling Tournament Oct. 20 and 21 to benefit victims of domestic violence.
Alpha Chi Omega member and Public Relations Chair Nicole Booth, Roseville senior, said the fund-raiser will benefit domestic-violence victims.
“We decided this year to try it because we thought it would be great for women of domestic violence because that is where all the proceeds go,” she said.
Booth said Alpha Chi Omega National Headquarters in Indiana started the tournament. Chapters host the Ultimate Frisbee Fling Tournament across the nation, but this marks the CMU chapter’s first year.
The game is like flag football but with a frisbee. The format of the event will be regular tournament pool play, she said.
Twenty, seven-person teams will be separated into two pools, A and B. Each pool will play all the teams in the group and winners will move on to semifinals and finals, she said.
Games will take place at the intramural fields and times for the events will be given when individuals register.
Booth said the sorority members hope to bring both on and off-campus community members together.
“The purpose of it is to join on- and off-campus community and any Registered Student Organizations so we can all unify for a great cause.”
Booth said the sorority is trying to get sponsors from the community for the event.
“We’re in the process of making sure we get those sponsors,” she said.
Outside officials have been hired to referee the event and refreshments will be provided, Booth said.
“Because Alpha Chi Omega is a sorority, it’s important for us to support women of domestic violence,” Booth said.
Money raised will benefit local shelters.
An event like this one allows students to connect with and give back to the community, she said.
“That’s why we do it.”
Booth said she is hoping the event will become an annual one.
“It has been extremely successful on other campuses and I can’t see why it would be any different at CMU.”
Early registration for the tournament is from Monday to Oct. 13, with late registration Oct. 14 through Oct. 18. Cost for early registration is $7 and $9 for late registration. All participants must pay as a team.
Registration booths will be set up in the Bovee University Center and the Student Activity Center.
Alpha Chi Omega is hosting a mock frisbee fling game at 2 p.m. on Friday outside Sweeney Hall and the Towers to promote the tournament. Students may register at the event.
The sorority also hosts a spaghetti dinner twice a year to benefit local shelters for victims of domestic violence. This year the dinner will take place Nov. 6 and 7.
