Cindy Hales to speak about managing nonprofit organizations

Opportunities in management of nonprofit associations is the focus of a speech by Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce President Cindy Hales.
Hales will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Grawn Hall 101.
Nonprofit association management is known as intrapreneurship and is similar to entrepreneurship. Intrapreneurship differs from entrepreneurship as it does not involve financial risk, Hales said.
Intrapreneurs lead or manage organizations like entrepreneurs, but usually the organization is owned by other entities, such as investors, Hales said. Examples of intrapreneurial organizations are professional associations, chambers of commerce and service organizations.
“This is an important topic because many people don’t know the opportunity in nonprofit organizations, Hales said. “Many people don’t look at them as a viable option.”
Hales’ speech is part of the CMU LaBelle Speaker Series. The series began three years ago and has brought several speakers to campus each semester.
The series is organized and sponsored by the LaBelle Entrepreneurial Center, said School of Accounting Professor James Damitio, entrepreneurship program director.
“We bring in speakers for anyone interested in the College of Business (Administration),” he said. “The topics revolve around entrepreneurship.”
Speakers allow students to gain insight into the field of entrepreneurship, Damitio said.
“It allows students to hear what the pitfalls of being an entrepreneur are as well as the rewards. It allows them to ask specific questions.”
Hales speech is free and open to the public. For more information contact the LEC at 774-3515.
