RSO of the Day

Members of CMU’s Geology Club hope to bring awareness about geology to campus.
“We try to promote the geosciences through activities such as field trips,” said Sara Heikkila, group president and Mohawk senior.
“The club is a way for all of us to do something that is not really school-related,” Heikkila said. “It’s kind of an outlet.”
Members organized a fund raiser last semester. From October to December, they sold various kinds of rocks such as quartz, crystal and amethyst.
Group members traveled to Chicago in January to visit the Field Museum. In April they will travel to Alpena to collect fossils.
The group also hosts speakers occasionally.
Members must have a geology major or minor and have taken GEL 101: physical geology, and GEL 102: physical geology lab. They are required to host a least one study session for 102.
The group helps with study sessions to brush up on their geology knowledge, Heikkila said.
“It’s also good volunteer service.”
There is a $5 per semester fee to join.
The group, more than 30 years old, has 15 members and meets at 4 p.m. Mondays in Brooks Hall 327. Anyone is welcome to attend and can call Heikkila at 775-6140 for information.
