Parking discussed by SGA

Parking and leadership took center stage at Monday’s Student Government Association meeting.

The university began exploring the option of adding a leadership minor last spring, and explored the possibility at the meeting.

“A year ago the Board of Trustees put the minor on its priority list,” said Sen. Nicole Wright, Clinton Twp. junior. “They decided that it was a good idea, but there was no funding for it because no department wanted to take it on.”

Students expressed an interest in adding this option, she said.

“If we pass this resolution, we will begin taking further steps to encourage a department to offer this minor,” said Wright, resolution co-author.

The resolution addressing parking solutions was introduced to SGA at last week’s general board meeting so that the two houses could gain feedback from students and begin discussion before voting.

According to the resolution, SGA supports the plan CMU Police will implement, moving all Northwest Quad resident parking privileges from Lot 8 to Lots 62E and 63, which also will extend shuttle bus hours from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The primary discussion of this resolution was to determine when it should be implemented.

“Everyone was in favor of the resolution, but when it should be implemented was the big issue,” Wright said. “Some wanted to wait until next year, but most agreed that they should wait until at least the second semester.”

The discussion’s outcome produced the possibility of an amendment that would suggest implementing the policy for the spring semester.

Both policies will be voted on at next week’s general board meeting.

Also in preparation for the general board meeting next week, senate members began looking into how students feel about the possibility of lengthening time between classes.

Next week at the Academic Senate meeting, members will vote on whether changes in time should take place.

This issue was ongoing during the last month since recommendations were made by the calendar committee to increase the amount of time.

“We are waiting to get the report from Registrar’s Office because that will tell us exactly what the class schedule would be,” Wright said. “It will tell us if less classes will be offered per day and when each class will start.”

Monday’s general board meeting will feature an open discussion of this issue.
