SGA probes ARAMARK, student relationship

The contract with ARAMARK, the company that provides all on-campus dining services, is still unsigned and will remain that way until student issues are addressed.

At the Student Government Association meeting Monday, a resolution was discussed by Senate Leader Bryan Beach, Grand Ledge junior, and House Leader Jon Seyferth, Muskegon senior, co-authors of the resolution.

They asked that campus buildings be allowed to serve non-ARAMARK goods and the removal of the ARAMARK policy that bans outside food from entering campus facilities.

SGA will vote on the resolution at the general board meeting Jan. 28.

“I asked that SGA not pass this resolution because it did not accurately present information that we have about ARAMARK,” said Sen. Steve Latour, Berkley senior. “I encouraged members to wait for the student services committee to present a resolution that contains all the information we are gathering from meetings with ARAMARK.”

Members of SGA, Residence Hall Assembly and university officials met with the five heads of the ARAMARK operations on campus, as well as the regional director of ARAMARK on Friday so student concerns could be shared, Latour said.

“Following that meeting we asked ARAMARK to give us until Friday to gather more opinions and compile the student feedback,” he said. “After that, we will set up another meeting with them.

“We are interested in seeing a few desired outcomes,” Latour said. “If that happens, we can eventually request the board to approve the contract.”
