Field hockey splits weekend

The Chippewas are 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the MAC.
Less than five minutes into the game against Louisville, the Cardinals Olivia Netzer scored. Louisville would add two more goals to make 3-0 at the half. Senior Maria Neiswender scored the lone goal for the Chippewas off a penalty corner. Junior Allison Foland and senior Jocelyn Gates assisted on the goal.
I felt we couldve played a little better, said Head Coach Cristy Freese. We played behind Louisville too much. We needed to step in front of them more.
CMU was outshot by the Cardinals 14-6 and also were edged in penalty corners 8-3.
Louisville scored on two penalty corners, and I think this was one of the first times that our corner defense wasnt very good, Freese said. We definitely needed better corner defense.
The Chippewas bounced back against Miami as Janel Spero got fourth shutout of the season turning away two shots. Spero now has 11 shutouts for her career.
We were ready for Miami, Freese said. I think we played a strong defensive game.
Sophomore Michelle Fogle had a career day with a goal and an assist. It was her third goal on the season and her first career assist. Sophomore Kristy Reed also added a goal, pushing her team high total to seven.
Miami is a tough team and they are a lot better than their record, Freese said.
It was the third straight meeting that the Chippewas held Miami scoreless.
CMU opens a six-game home stand at Kelly/Shorts Stadium Thursday in a MAC matchup against Ohio.
