Spero takes another award
Senior Janel Spero was acknowledged for her contributions to the field hockey team for the third time this season.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named Spero to the first team of the Division I West. She is the first player from CMU to earn this honor since Laura Farell made the team in 1991.
Spero had a 1.50 goals-against average and a .763 save percentage, both led the Mid-American Conference. She also led the MAC in minutes played.
When the team does well, people start to pay attention to our team, said Head Coach Cristy Freese.
Spero is happy to receive the award.
It is exciting to receive such a nice award, Spero said. It is just like any other award. Its nice to be recognized.
Only three other players from the Mid-American Conference were named to the team.
Part of the reason players on our team are getting recognized is because we had a really good year, Spero said. The only thing I wanted to do while I was here was win a MAC championship.
In four years at CMU, Spero has played in 76 games with 12 shutouts, putting her at number four on the career shutout list.
