Women host Western tonight

The women’s basketball team hosts in-state rival Western Michigan at 7 p.m. today.

CMU has not defeated the Broncos in the previous three meetings between the teams, including the first round of the MAC tournament last year.

The Chippewas lost 77-67 in the opening round last season, as they made the game close in the second half. The Broncos shot 48 percent from the floor and outrebounded Central 50-33.

Western is coming off an 81-48 Thursday victory over Northern Illinois. The Broncos had four players in double figures including Casey Rost’s game-high 24 points. NIU did not have a single player score more than nine points. The Broncos are 9-4 overall this season, 3-0 in the MAC.

The squad fell to Bowling Green 63-45 Saturday, as 24 turnovers and a 32 percent shooting percentage cost the Chippewas

“Nothing could go right,” said sophomore Lindy Hatfield. “It was just one of those games.”

The team did not have much to be positive about after the game, considering that senior Desiree Eidson was the only CMU player to score in double figures with 15.

“We just had a bad game,” Hatfield said. “We didn’t execute our offensive plays and the pressure that they put on us really made us fall apart.”

Hatfield had five points and five rebounds, going two-of-nine from the field in 27 minutes.

Freshman point guard Erin Kuhl fouled out of the game with only five points and three rebounds, to go along with five turnovers.

“Point blank — we played bad,” said freshman Chasidy Myers. “The turnovers really killed us today.”

Despite shooting 9-of-25 in the first half, the Chippewas were only down eight at halftime. The team could not catch up, scoring just eight points in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

CMU held the edge in rebounding over the Falcons, 35-34, led by freshman Casey Manning’s nine rebounds

With the loss, Central falls to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
