MAC play begins with loss and tie

The soccer team lost to Toledo 2-0 Sunday during the first weekend of MAC play.

The Chippewas tied Bowling Green 2-2 Friday.

“We showed that we can be a good team when we want to be,” said Head Coach Mark Salisbury. “We need to be able to play hard for 90 minutes.”

The loss drops the Chippewas to 1-2-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in the MAC.

The team trailed Bowling Green 1-0 and 2-1, before salvaging a tie.

Sophomore Stacy Downing recorded her second consecutive three-point game by tallying the team’s first goal and assisting on the Rachel Snyder’s tying score.

Downing leads the team with two goals and two assists for six points.

“She had a great performance and is starting to realize (her potential),” Salisbury said.

Snyder notched her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Salisbury was very pleased with her play.

“Synder had a great weekend, it was a major growth for her,” he said.

Senior goalkeeper Kari Alexander made eight saves to earn the tie Friday. She has 201 career saves and is 16 shy of breaking the school record set by Beth Quiney.

Central outshot the Rockets 9-8 Sunday but were unable to score on goalkeeper Molly Patterson. The Rockets scored their first goal on a penalty kick and connected again in the second half on a corner kick.

“We really struggled with cohesiveness and we were out of rhythm,” Salisbury said. “We had great chances but just didn’t finish.”

Freshman Anne Decker suffered the loss in net and made three saves on five shots.

Central returns to action Friday against Buffalo.
