Men’s club soccer loses to Michigan State

The men’s club soccer team suffered a 5-0 loss to Michigan State Friday after winning the Northwood Tournament two weeks ago.

“It was not a good game for us, we didn’t play well,” said CMU team member Kyle Phillips. “MSU was smarter, faster and played as a team.”

Michigan State was leading 2-0 by halftime.  A missed penalty kick by Ryan Kratch in the second half ruined CMU’s comeback chances.

“It could have been a momentrum shift in the game, but it did the exact opposite,” said CMU captain John Bunting.

Other factors contributing to Central’s loss were injuries, absences and a lack of leadership on the team, Bunting said.

Bunting suffered a hamstring pull within the first five minutes and missed the rest of the game. Bunting is out for the Northern Michigan game Saturday and is questionable for next weekend’s Western Michigan Tournament. Rob Emond also played the entire game with a bad ankle.

A lack of leadership is making competition difficult, Bunting said.

Phillips said forward Kyle Simpson was the player of the game.

“He played a good game and really put forth alot of effort,” Phillips said.

CMU will host Northern at 2 p.m. Saturday at the IM fields.

Club hockey loses to U-M

Central’s club hockey team lost 4-3 to Michigan Friday in a game of missed opportunities.

Despite a solid overall performance, the team was unable to score enough goals to overcome the visiting Wolverines.

“We just couldn’t capitalize on scoring opportunities,” said team captain Rob Innis.

CMU took an early 1–0 lead on a Chris LaPan power play goal.

The lead was short-lived when Michigan quickly tied the game at 1-1.

The second period was highlighted by two more U-M goals. Innis said both occured during a mental lapse.

“We had a small mental breakdown in the second period and fell down a couple of goals,” he said.

It was a breakdown the Chippewas were never able to recover from. CMU outplayed Michigan in the third period. The team created an abundance of shots and scoring opportunities but could not overcome the deficit.

Central just could not put the puck in the net when they needed to, Innis said.

“There were numerous scoring opportunities,” he said. “We just couldn’t capitalize on them.”

Also scoring for Central were Pete Courtright and Brad Zielke. CMU plays Friday at Illinois.

Rugby cruises at U-M

The women’s rugby team won 45-0 Saturday, despite worries about Michigan’s potential.

The team was concerned with Michigan heading into Ann Arbor.

“They weren’t what we expected,” said CMU team president Casey Brockway. “Their scores have been up and down all year, so we went there expecting a tough match. I think we overestimated them a bit.”

Once again, senior Sarah Chavot led the team with six tries while senior Erin Socks had two tries.

Brockway said the team was pleased with Saturday’s performance and it helped with confidence.

“In previous games, we really didn’t get off to very good starts, struggling to get that first try,” Brockway said. “This game showed us we can go into games strong.”

CMU plays Kalamazoo College at the IM Fields Saturday.
