Field hockey falls 1-0 in MAC tourney

The field hockey team ended its season in disappointing fashion Thursday losing 1-0 to Miami in the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Ball State.

“Miami outplayed us today,” said coach Cristy Freese. “We didn’t have it today.”

Central ends the season 8-11 while Miami (7-13) faces Kent State in the semifinals today at 2:30 p.m. The RedHawks advance for the first time since the 2000 tournament.

Central played inconsistent field hockey all season and couldn’t find the answer against the RedHawks.

Junior Alisa Folk and senior Kristy Reed were held without a shot by Miami defense.

“Those inconsistencies came back to haunt us today,” Freese said.

The game was a defensive battle until Courtney Furia scored on a penalty corner with 4:49 remaining in the game. Taylor Florence assisted on the play.

Miami held an 8-5 advantage on shots while CMU held a 7-5 edge on penalty corners.

Central had two shots on goal.

“Offensively we didnt have that extra spark,” Freese said.

Central goalkeeper Danielle Frank made three saves.

Kerri Orr made two saves for Miami.

Senior Stasia Burroughs didn’t play for the Chippewas and injuries to Kristy Reed and Erica Takach plagued Central.

Fourth-seeded Ohio advanced to the semifinals beating Ball State 3-1. Ohio plays top seeded Louisville today at noon.

Colleen Marshall scored the match-winning goal for the Bobcats early in the first half.
